FINE ART NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY

I most definitely lean towards the fine art style of photography as my background and passion is rooted in a love of art. I believe what makes my work stand out from others is my love of paintings, particularly work by the Dutch masters who’s still life and subjects were often painted in low light, creating lots of contrast, drama and subtle tones. I definitely go there for inspiration. So if you also love a more painterly style you’ll love the fresh florals package.

MY STUDIO

I am very fortunate to have a unique studio/creative space which. IT is situated in a building over 300 years old. It is has a lofty feel with it’s high ceiling, sash windows and my favourite feature is the wooden floor. It is possibly not what you imagine a photo studio to look like but everyone loves it when they visit. Thanks to all the windows the studio has the most amazing natural light which I use for my fresh flower set ups. It is worth noting at this point that I will usually only take new born bookings in the mornings as the light in the studio is optimal (especially in the winter months).

MY PROPS

I possibly invest in new props too often as I am always wanting to do something different and so I have lots of lovely headbands, wraps and a variety of posing baskets and bowls. The possibilities are endless! I confess I am OBSESSED.

Before your session I will ask you what your colour preferences are or if you have a favourite flower you’d like me to incorporate. You will have full use of my props too.

MY EDITING STYLE

My aim is always to produce an image that you want to keep looking at again and again and photography is the medium which comes most natural to me. I have little interest in fancy photo shop tools or over processing images. Whilst I appreciate the skills you can acquire in post production, I still believe your baby should look like YOUR baby and not an over photo shopped version of your baby or one about to feature in a magazine aimed at selling you stuff you don’t need. I believe a good photograph is about light, subject and composition and not what you can manipulate after. Anyone can learn to use photoshop. The artist in me simply wants to create something beautiful and as far as I am concerned once your baby has arrived you’ve already done the hard bit!

WHY I USE FRESH FLOWERS

Introducing fresh flowers to my work has been quite an exciting revelation. Researching how other photographers use flowers I discovered most use a digital backdrop which in many ways is genius but you then end up re-creating the same image every time (albeit a different baby). Whilst this would prove more cost effective from a business perspective I prefer to be part of the process. Selecting the flowers and arranging them myself is as important as taking the photos. Your baby is unique and your photos should be too.

ADDITIONAL DIGITAL PHOTOS OR PRINTS?

You are absolutely NOT under any obligation to purchase from your gallery. I do strongly encourage all my clients to print hard copies at some point and feel very passionate about printing in general and as a mother of three I know how hard it is to get round to actually doing it. We have so many digital copies of everything it is hard to keep up these days!

WALL ART/PRINTING ADVICE

Firstly get your favourite image up on the wall ASAP before you struggle to find the time to do it. There are lots of great options from your gallery including box framed canvases which I LOVE because unlike frames they are not easy to damage, they are easy to clean and if you like a contemporary style they are perfect. If like me you are also a bit arty farty and you prefer things a little less perfect or like to use a variety of frames then go for a lovely Giclee. This is a fine art paper which I would always recommend for the floral images. It has a texture to it which you might not even want to cover with glass. It’ll also last you forever (unlike normal photo paper which will fade over time).
